“Welcome to High Barnet” declares a brightly coloured mural which it is hoped will provide an eye-catching greeting for visitors

A large mural painted by students at Barnet and Southgate College – which features iconic images of the town – will welcome visitors to High Barnet once a site has been agreed.

Chipping Barnet Town Team decided to commission a welcoming mural as a way of building up the appeal and attraction of the town centre while also strengthening local identity.

Barnet College was keen to get involved in a project which the town team hopes will be the first of other initiatives to engage local students in the life and history of Chipping Barnet.

“What the project has been all about is helping students build up their relationship with Barnet and engage with the town’s rich history,” said Isabella Tessier, acting art and design course leader, at the unveiling of the mural.

It reflects Barnet’s role in the Wars of the Roses – a feature which will connect with medieval banners on display in the High Street each summer – and depicts well known buildings such as the Everyman cinema and Barnet Parish Church.

For the students, it was their first chance to engage in the production and painting of a mural.

They were guided in their work by two professional street artists – see above James Titchner (left) and Julian Phethean – from the community arts company Positive Arts.

They were as excited as the students at the official unveiling because it was the first time four separate panels had been lined up together and they could all see the finished mural.

“It has all been so rewarding. The students really enjoyed painting the mural, working collaboratively in this way.”

The mural is in weather-proof paint and will be finished off with a lacquer to protect the colours.

One possible site for the mural is the wall of The Corner Café alongside the Chipping Close car park in St Albans Road, just before the junction with the High Street.

This is the location preferred by the Town Team as it would be a dramatic position at the one of the main approach points to the High Street – a site which has yet to be agreed with the owners of the building and would require planning approval.

An alternative location is at the front of the courtyard outside the main entrance to the Barnet and Southgate College.

Eamonn Rafferty, secretary to the Town Team, said he and his colleagues were amazed to see what the students had been produced.

“We hope it is going to be the first of more collaborations with the college” – a hope endorsed by Gail Laser, founder of Love Barnet.

She was sure a welcoming mural would be appreciated by people walking or driving into Barnet and would be a reminder to the students themselves of their contribution helping to strengthen the appeal of the town.

For Barnet Vale Councillor, Sue Baker, attending the mural unveiling was a welcome return to the college where she had been a teacher, lecturer and curriculum manager.

“A project like this provides students with direct involvement with the community. Residents and local groups can see the students gaining an understanding of the historical and cultural life of Chipping Barnet.

“The teachers have said how much the students got immersed in their project and with the help of Barnet Museum, took an interest in local history.”

Chipping Barnet Town Team contributed, with Barnet College, to the cost of the mural and the team will be seeking further sponsorship from businesses in the area to help with installation costs.
