Our Work

Major developments
The Society is usually invited by developers to pre-application discussions regarding major development proposals. We publish updates in our newsletters and on our website and, when a planning application is submitted, we respond formally to the Council.

Chipping Barnet Town Centre
Alongside the Chipping Barnet Town Team (with Barnet Council, Barnet Residents Association and others) we keep a close watch on our High Street neighbourhood, supporting and proposing actions to improve its appearance and economic health.

Consultation Submissions
The Barnet Society regularly submits responses to consultations, not only by the London Borough of Barnet, but also by the London Assembly, the Mayor of London, Transport for London and central government.

Green Belt Consultations
In recent years, the Society has submitted responses to public consultations regarding the Green Belt by the All Party Parliamentary Group, the London Assembly, Hertsmere Council and the London Borough of Enfield.

Planning & Environment Reports
Our newsletters usually include a Planning & Environment report summarising our views and actions on development activity and other environmental matters. More detailed reports are discussed at each meeting of our Committee.

Green Belt Articles
Our founding in 1945 was prompted by the threat to build on the green space that surrounds Chipping Barnet on three sides. We continue to campaign for the protection of the Green Belt in Barnet and surrounding areas. The Society is an active member of the London Green Belt Council.
