Last butcher’s shop closes
End of an era. Butcher’s Hook, the last remaining butcher’s shop in High Street, Barnet, has ceased trading and the premises are for sale or to let.
The former proprietor, John Bye, was the trader with the longest family association of shopkeepers in the High Street, being the seventh generation in a long line of North London family butchers dating back to the 1840s.
Butcher’s Hook opened in 2011 at 119 High Street when Mr Bye took over from W.T. Parish, a butcher’s shop originally established by the Williams Brothers in the 1960s.
Back in the 1890s, High Barnet shoppers had the choice of eleven butchers and a great variety of other trades and businesses. See here

Sad to see this go. Been working in Barnet a year ish and I went into him about 3 times over the spring/summer. Had a really different variety of stuff, Vietnamese, Thai spices, even bought a Peruvian steak off him. He was talking about doing a hot counter which would’ve been great. What a shame
i am already missing johns “skewers” and my £20 melees ….man, im sad!
If it is to be re-used as a foodservice brand, please no more coffee shops or italian’s. We have far too many in Barnet and there if no differentiation for places to eat or grab lunch.

I echo the words above. I just hope something good can replace it. Please not another charity shop.
We need initiatives like widening the pavement and generally smartening up of the high street or we will see much more of this.
Saddened that the butchers shop has closed and hope John Bye can have success elsewhere.
At least we do have an excellent butcher’s counter in our local Waitrose still

What is wrong with Barnet? What is wrong with Barnet Council? There is something wrong with the management of our High Streets that is destroying our community.
I’m afraid if the shops are not used they have to shut. Just look at the fuss that was made about the market. They tried to get stalls in there and nobody went there so they shut. We are down to 2 fruit and veg stalls now. It’s just a fact of life I’m afraid. Most people want to be able to park for free and easily. That’s why big shopping centres and online shopping is doing so well.
We won’t have any shops in the High Street within 10 years.
