Retired teachers help students to graduate

Nine pupils from Totteridge Academy have been awarded special commendations by the educational charity TalentEd which enlists retired teachers to help pupils from low-income households to develop self-awareness and study skills.

A total of 19 students graduated from the first year of the project at ç, and the nine who were commended for outstanding progress were presented with their awards at a TalentEd graduation ceremony.

TalentEd’s aim is to help gifted and talented year-10 students from under-privileged families, and arranges for qualified teachers to take two-hour sessions, for groups of six pupils, tackling a variety of tasks, including the development of presentation and debating skills, writing and interview technique practice, structuring essays and revision and exam techniques.

“We are delighted the programme has had such a positive impact on many of the bright students at Totteridge Academy, and we hope to return to help support Totteridge Academy in the new academic year starting in September,” said TalentEd.

The charity brings together retired teachers and year-10 students at several schools in west London and plans to expand further into Essex and East Sussex.
