I am 94 years old and I remember going to the "pictures" as we called the cinema then once every week, before the war, and also during the war. I married at 20 and my husband and I went to the cinema every week until we had a family. The price of a seat was very affordable, and the programme used to consist of an "A" film, a "B" film, a small film, the Pathe News, and a preview of the next weeks' programme. The price of a seat was nominal and we really had our moneys worth.
If there was an air raid during the war at a performance, it was announced to the audience that the air raid siren had gone off, and that we could stay in the cinema or leave.
The cinema was part of every ones life. There was several cinemas within walking distance of every bodies home. Mostly American films were shown and not so many English films..
