2010 AGM The Barnet Society's sixty-fifth AGM took place on 17 June with a fascinating talk on the proposed North London Light Railway by John Cox. Chaired by our President, Aubrey Rose CBE, and joined by Right Hon Theresa Villiers MP, the meeting was well attended and the formal business included voting in our new Committee for the coming year. We will include an article on the railway in our next Newsletter.

We are delighted to note the welcome return of flowers in hanging baskets that, once again, adorn our High Street and we thank Barnet College for grasping the nettle (or should that be geranium?) and footing the bill.  We are sure you will agree that they make the place look better and we hope this is just the first of a number of initiatives to brighten up our town centre.  And congratulations to Victoria Bakery on winning Smooth Radio's Love London Awards for Best Local Shop!

On 3 July the Barnet Society had its final visit to the interior of the new Barnet College prior to it being handed over to the College for fit-out, ready for the new students arriving in September. And very impressive it is. The outside works and formation of the new public square will continue over the summer holidays, as will work on Tudor Hall, which we were able to see for the first time. The latter is a splendid building and we look forward to holding talks and meetings inside when it’s finished. Barnet College1

It’s that time of year again – every Saturday in July and August, the tower of Chipping Barnet’s St John the Baptist Church is open to visitors. And it’s well worth the climb! Between 10.30 and 1.30pm, weather permitting, you can follow the narrow spiral staircase to the ringing chamber, past the bells and up to the tower top, where the views are marvellous.

Friends of Barnet Market mobilised the largest number of supporters thus far for the campaign to collect signatures for the petition calling for an improved surface.  Both the traders and their customers have found the loose, black material presently used to be uncomfortable, dirty and potentially dangerous.   Those with shopping trolleys or pushchairs find particular difficulty and reportedly, some older people, less steady on their feet, have given up coming to the Market.
