One of the main activities of the Society involves protecting the quality of our local environment. This means continuing to be vigilant and keeping pace with the ever-increasing pressures and changes and includes:

  • monitoring local planning applications (including writing letters of support or objection, where necessary)
  • keeping a watchful eye on our town centre (eg the state of the High Street), particular buildings (eg The Old Bull) and local facilities (eg the market)
  • protecting and encouraging the planting of trees
  • monitoring new local and strategic planning guidance and policy
  • and last (but certainly not least), commitment to the continued protection of the Green Belt

The Planning and Environment Committee, which deals with such matters on behalf of the Barnet Society, is urgently seeking assistance. If you have an active interest in the quality of your local neighbourhood and can spare a few hours each month, there are a number of ways you could help.

The Old Barnet MarketThose with some knowledge and experience of planning, architecture, urban design or landscape would be particularly welcome, although this is by no means essential - enthusiasm and a passion for the area are the main pre-requisites.
